Exams

Some students / teachers like to measure  progress  by taking exams. The teacher will recommend when the time is right as there are many aspects that need to be covered before students are ready. We work with 3 exam boards that all have their own way of doing things. Normally you prepare 3 pieces, some scales or technical exercises and some other small tests called sight reading and aural.

Your teacher will prepare all of this work with you, but make sure you do the practice at home so that you have a great experience. For some exams you will need an accompanist (somebody who plays piano for you). If you do need one your teacher will tell you, please click here to request details.

There are 3 exam boards that our students use.

Take a look at their sites below.  Please don’t use these sites to submit exam entries – click here and follow the instructions on the entry forms.

Rock School >

Once a teacher has decided a child is ready for entry they will send a signed notification slip home with your child. Entries are made and paid for on-line through Newport City Council payment site.  Please follow the instructions on the entry form and do not make entries through the Rock School web site. Closing dates apply and any entries made after the closing date will not be accepted and payments will be returned.  Your child’s exam may take place at any time during the provisional date range, once the timetable has been set it may not be possible to make changes.  In some cases where exam sessions are oversubscribed your child’s exam may be scheduled on a ‘reserve’ date.  If there are any problems please contact your child’s music tutor.

Q: What if my child misses the exam?

A: Exam boards may offer a partial refund or re-entry permit for missed exams on production of a valid medical note.  This is at the discretion of the exam board.  Missed exams for any other reason will not be eligible for refunds.  Exam entries and payments are with the exam boards and Gwent Music will not be liable for any refunds or re-entry permits for missed exams.

Q: How will I know if I have passed?

A: It normally takes a few weeks, and sometimes longer for the results to be released. These are then passed on to the teachers who will inform you of the result.
