Torfaen Music Centre
As you may be aware, Gwent Music, and Music Services in Wales continue to be under enormous financial pressure as Local Authorities have cut funding over the last 5 years. We, like other music services, have been required to look at delivering a service with very little funding. This year we have had a withdrawal of funding of £95,000 form Torfaen County Borough Council. We are hopeful that some of the recommendations from the recent Culture & Welsh Language Committee – ‘Hitting the Right Note’ on access to Music Education in Wales will be accepted by Welsh Government and that core funding will be available.
You may have contributed to the Gwent Music Survey two years ago, where we asked parents and students to feedback on a number of preferred options. The conclusion was that we increased charges, and managed to maintain as much range as possible. Unfortunately, the increasing financial pressure on parents and schools, has meant that numbers accessing lessons and activities has fallen. We now need to look at alternatives in order to maintain the musical standards that we are all so proud of, whilst maintaining as much choice as possible. We do not feel that increasing charges further will be accepted by the majority, and although we receive fantastic support from various ‘Friends Groups’ at Music Centres and Greater Gwent, this alone will not be enough to address the challenge.
Therefore, we have had to make following changes to what is currently on offer, and we sincerely hope that you will all understand the logic, and reasons for these decisions. The aim has been to sustain the numbers and access for those attending local /junior level, whilst amalgamating some of our senior groups in order to avoid duplication and get the best possible experience for students working at a higher standard.
